What is Somatic Sexology?

Somatic sexology is at the intersection of the body, sexuality, and personal experience. It offers a means for individuals to develop a deeper understanding and connection with their bodies, sexual selves, and relationships through a somatic (body-based) approach. It encompasses a wide-range of modalities and disciplines such as anatomy, physiology, yoga, trauma informed touch, neurobiology, meditation, psychology, bodywork and somatic learning theory.

Through somatic sexology, one can cultivate a state of “embodiment” which is the experience of being fully present and connected to one’s physical body; being aware of and engaged with bodily sensations, emotions, and experiences in the present moment. Embodying one’s experiences can have numerous benefits, including increased self-acceptance, emotional regulation, stress reduction, improved body image, enhanced intimacy and pleasure, and a greater sense of authenticity and wholeness.

What we do

Young man getting a message in a spa

We offer professional trainings to certify practitioners who are highly skilled, ethical and committed to assisting clients in discovering a more natural way of being in their body along with more ease and flow in their daily lives.

These trainings are powerful, life-changing and at the cutting-edge of somatic education.

You will learn how to offer sessions that are client directed, consent driven and strictly boundaried using a variety of modalities and practices. Modalities include touch, breathwork, movement and sound among many others. The somatic approach is highly experiential and body focused for both the practitioner in training and, ultimately, the client.

Clients learn to have agency for their body, emotions, actions, and pleasure. While the ability to know and express one’s authentic needs/wants, desires and boundaries is important to healthy intimacy and sex, these skills are useful in many settings beyond the bedroom.

Why
learn somatically?

Somatic learning offers many benefits on its own or along with other, more traditional, methods of instruction and has been shown to be quite effective. Somatic learning emphasizes the connection between the body and the mind and is highly experiential. It engages the whole person; body (sensation) and mind (feelings and emotions).

This approach to learning and working with clients is innovative and continues to rapidly evolve and grow in popularity and acceptance. Other client-focused professions (such as psychology and healthcare) are now recognizing the importance of somatic approaches in healing the mind-body divide. This training offers you the opportunity to be surrounded and supported by trailblazers and pioneers.

Some benefits of somatic learning are:

1) Multiple senses and bodily experiences are engaged which can deepen the learning process. This active engagement with the material can lead to improved retention and understanding of the material.

2) Somatic learning encourages individuals to tune into their bodily sensations, emotions, and reactions. This increased awareness can promote emotional regulation and self-reflection, allowing learners to better understand their own responses and manage stress or anxiety.

3) By integrating physical experiences, cognitive processes, and emotional engagement, somatic learning offers a holistic and integrative approach to education. It recognizes that learning involves the entire person, not just the mind.

4) Somatic learning encourages individuals to explore their own unique ways of moving, expressing, and interacting with the world. It promotes a sense of empowerment, individuality, and self-expression, fostering a deeper connection to oneself and others.

5) Somatic learning often involves group activities and cooperative learning experiences. Through shared physical experiences and interactions, learners can develop embodied empathy, social skills, and a greater understanding of others.
